Mrs Robertson was delayed for 18.5 hours with Singapore Airlines and received €600 compensation!

I was travelling alone to visit family in New Zealand, the first leg of my journey was with Singapore Airlines from London Heathrow to Singapore, where I would get a connecting flight on to New Zealand.

The flight was due to leave at 10 PM. I got settled in my seat ready for the long flight. As far as I knew we were all cleared for take-off and then there was just silence – we just sat there for 30 minutes until we were told there was a fuel leak and the flight would have to be cancelled until the following day.

We had to get off the plane, go back through passport control and were taken to a hotel, it was 2 in the morning by now! We did not get any information about when the replacement flight would be at this time, eventually they got me on a flight at 2 PM the following day! Of course at this point I didn’t know what was happening with my connection flight from Singapore either.

At Singapore airport I had to find the Singapore Airlines desk and sort out my onward flight to New Zealand, luckily this was dealt with quite efficiently. In the end it took me 60 hours to get from London to New Zealand!

Even though Singapore Airlines were good to me, I knew I was entitled to flight delay compensation. I tried to contact the airline myself to claim. I do not have the internet so I found a help line number but the line was just dead. I also had a form that I tried to fill out but it was not really relevant. Eventually I went back to the travel agent I booked my flight through to see if they could help me.

They actually work with Air Delay and a member of staff filled in the online form for me, it looked a lot easier than trying to call or fill out the form I had. My claim took about 4 months, it had to be dealt with by the Air Delay solicitor -I would have definitely given up if I had to do it myself!

I was awarded flight delay compensation of €600, of course Air Delay take their 25%, the rest will go towards my flights next time I travel to New Zealand.

I would certainly recommend Air Delay to anyone who thinks they may be able to claim. I actually recommended them to some friends who had a 2-day delay recently, travelling back from Italy.

My friends thought that as the airline had treated them well and put them in a hotel they would not be entitled to flight delay compensation. They looked on the Air Delay website and they found they are due compensation, they submitted their claim and are now waiting for the cheque!
