Mr & Mrs Dower were delayed for 5 hours with Flybe and received €500 compensation!
In January 2015 my wife and I travelled with Flybe from Birmingham to Chambery, we were going on a package holiday, skiing for a week.
Got to the airport, checked in, passed through security, boarded the plane, taxied down the run runway and came to a stop..... for five hours. We just waited on the plane for 5 hours. We did not get any information first of all but eventually we were told the delay was being caused by a fuel problem at Chambery airport and that the pilot did not want to take us back to the gate as he was worried he would miss an available take-off slot.
It really was an awful wait, we got no complimentary drinks or food, after 3 hours my wife and I were so thirsty we bought a bottle of water each, we felt the airline should have at least provided us with a free bottle of water. Some passengers had started drinking and were getting quite inebriated while we were waiting. The atmosphere on the plane was starting to get unpleasant.
The flight should have taken off at 9.15AM but in the end took off at 2.15 PM. We eventually arrived at Val d'Isere resort early evening. We had banked on arriving at the resort by lunchtime and have our ski rental organized, so we got a full days skiing on the first day of our holiday. We ended up spending nearly all the next day organising ski hire so a day’s skiing was lost. Luckily we had no delays on the flight back.
Once I got back to the UK, I wrote a letter of complaint to Flybe. The response I got, was that the delay was caused by something that was beyond their control and we were not due any compensation from them. I decided to call them to follow up, at which point they offered my wife and me a £10 voucher each as a goodwill gesture. I did not feel a £10 voucher was fair compensation and told them they could keep it.
It was over a year later when I saw an Air Delay advert online, clicked on the link, filled in their very straightforward online form…. with no expectations of compensation whatsoever. Of course I got the regular updates about the status of my claim from Air Delay, but still did not really expect to receive any compensation. Then the cheques arrived in the post £156 each, one for my wife and one for me, a total of £312! We were absolutely delighted. This is still in the bank and will probably be used towards another holiday!
Air Delay were brilliant, I was so pleased they helped me claim compensation, more than a year after the event, and it was made so easy too. I have already recommended them to a friend, who has just submitted a compensation claim for a 4 hour delay. Thank you Air Delay!
