Mr Coley was delayed for 18 hours with Brussels Airlines and received €600 compensation!

In April 2015 I travelled alone to attend a wedding in Uganda. The first leg of my journey was from Birmingham International to Brussels, where I would transfer to an onward flight to Entebbe, Uganda.

I checked in, went through security and boarded my flight at the scheduled time. Once everyone was on the plane there seemed to be an issue with passenger numbers. The cabin crew just kept going up and down doing head counts, then they would all disappear for a while (I assume to check how many people should be on the flight) and then come back again and do another head count. No announcements were made at all. This went on for some time and this is what caused the delay and caused me to miss my onward flight.

I spoke to Brussels Airlines staff at Brussels airport, they decided to route me from Brussels to Rome, then Rome to Ethiopia and then onto Uganda. By this point I realised I would miss the wedding I was travelling to attend. Their treatment of me was awful during the delay, completely unacceptable. I am disabled and also need to take medication, this was in another bag that they said they could not get for me. I only received refreshments on the planes and I felt like I was just dumped at Ethiopia. I had also arranged for someone to pick me up from my original flight arrival (they had an 800 mile round trip) so I ended up having to pay them extra and pay for them to stay in a hotel overnight. Needless to say I will be using a different airline from now on, I travel from the UK to Uganda twice a year and had never experienced anything like this.

I only thought I would try to claim compensation a year or so later, had a quick look online and found Air Delay. The claim process was so easy, I got regular email updates and just over 2 months later I received my compensation cheque in the post. Even after all the hassle I had travelling to Uganda on that occasion, I still go there twice a year – my compensation money will go towards the next flight.
